In fact, Jack Daniel's, the most popular whiskey brand in America, is not a bourbon but a Tennessee whiskey, and most of the classic American whiskey-based cocktails call for rye, not its sweeter cousin bourbon.

What makes bourbon distinct from other whiskeys is the way it is manufactured and aged. Per the American Bourbon Association, in order to be classified as bourbon, a whiskey needs to be distilled from a mixture of grains, or mash, that's at least 51 percent corn.
What is the difference between regular whiskey and rye whiskey?
The main difference between rye whiskey and other types of whiskey in the United States is that rye whiskey has to be made from a mash bill that is at least 51% rye. There is no limit on how much rye a mash bill can have, but some rye whiskeys have a mash bill that is 100% rye.
Rye is generally spicier with a more aggressive flavor than bourbon. Bourbon whiskey typically has a sweeter, more mellow flavor than rye, with notes of vanilla, oak and caramel.
Jameson is produced from a blend of grain whiskey and single pot still whiskey, which uses a mixture of malted and unmalted or "green" Irish barley, all sourced from within a fifty-mile radius around the distillery in Cork.
For a whiskey to be considered bourbon, the mixture of grains from which the product is distilled (the mash) must be, at least, 51% corn, rye, wheat, malted barley, or malted rye grain. On top of that, the mixture must be stored in charred oak containers and cannot contain any additives.

Jack Daniel's Straight Rye Whiskey
Jack Daniel's Straight Tennessee Rye is produced using a mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley. It follows the same Lincoln County Process that makes Tennessee whiskey unique.
Rye whiskey must be made from at least 51% rye, with the remainder of the mashbill usually comprised of corn, wheat, and/or malted barley. Corn whiskey must be made from at least 80% corn.
The corn mash used in bourbon makes for a sweet and full-bodied flavor, while the rye mash in rye whiskey creates spicy tones and a drier taste. Aged bourbon doesn't evolve as much as aged rye, which becomes more subtle while still packing its patented punch.
As any whiskey maker will tell you, all bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon. And all sour mash is bourbon whiskey but not all bourbon is sour mash. Both bourbon and sour mash whiskeys are uniquely American spirits, descended from moonshine and produced primarily in Kentucky and Tennessee.
The difference between Tennessee Whiskey, like Jack Daniel's, for example, and Bourbon is that after the spirit is distilled, Tennessee Whiskey is filtered through sugar-maple charcoal. The name, Bourbon, comes from an area known as Old Bourbon, around what is now Bourbon County, Kentucky.

Purists like to drink it neat, which means that the bourbon is at room temperature, and without ice. Some like to add a few drops of water to the whiskey, to "open up" the aroma of the bourbon. If you go this route, you may appreciate drinking your bourbon in a brandy snifter.
For the first few years of its life, bourbon definitely improves with age. New make bourbon isn't delicious, but six-year-old bourbon certainly can be. But it's possible to overdo it. In practice, older whiskey isn't always better--and that's particularly true when it comes to bourbon.
