How many availability zones should I use?
High availability requires at least two availability zones. The idea is that only one zone will go down at a time: the proverbial backhoe cutting power and network cables. Since Amazon isolates the data centers for each availability zone, that backhoe won't take out more than one AZ.

When you create certain resources in a region, you will be asked to choose a zone in which to host that resource. There are anywhere between two and five availability zones in an AWS Region.
In addition to the existing region in Mumbai and the new one planned for Hyderabad, there are currently seventeen CloudFront edge locations in India: four in Hyderabad, another four in New Delhi, three in Bangalore, three in Mumbai, two in Chennai, and one in Kolkata.

An availability set consists of two or more fault domains that share a common power source and network switch. VMs in an availability set are distributed across the fault domains, so if a hardware failure affects one fault domain, network traffic can still be routed to the VMs in the other fault domains.

Measuring availability based on requests.
This is often measured for one-minute or five-minute periods. Then a monthly uptime percentage (time-base availability measurement) can be calculated from the average of these periods. If no requests are received in a given period it is counted at 100% available for that time.
The total volume of data and number of objects you can store are unlimited. Individual Amazon S3 objects can range in size from a minimum of 0 bytes to a maximum of 5 terabytes. The largest object that can be uploaded in a single PUT is 5 gigabytes.
The availability zone refers to an isolated data center within a single region. Each availability zone includes multiple data centers, and no single data center is shared between multiple availability zones. Of the three major providers, Amazon's regions and zones are the most developed.
Can a subnet span Availability Zones? No. A subnet must reside within a single Availability Zone.
AZ can have more than one subnets. However, there is a soft limit of 200 subnets per AZ.
