Engraving on cement or concrete is an economical way to mask imperfections while providing a myriad of design choices to perk up your patio, walkway, garage floor or driveway. Engraved cement can be made to look like brick, cobblestone, natural stone and decorative tile.

Once you have your letters spaced the way you like them, gently tap the first letter on all sides with a hammer to sink the cookie cutter into the cement. The letter only needs to sink in about 1/4″ or so. Gently remove by pulling them directly upward. Repeat with all of your letters or numbers and that's it!
The Solution. The best way to get stamped concrete over existing concrete is a stampable overlay. Stampable overlays are a thick overlay capable of accepting texture from stamps. These overlays are much thicker than microtoppings but not as much as a self-leveling overlay.
Engraving is an intaglio printmaking process in which lines are cut into a metal plate in order to hold the ink. In engraving, the plate can be made of copper or zinc. The metal plate is first polished to remove all scratches and imperfections from the surface so that only the intentional lines will be printed.
Leave the concrete to set up until it is stiff but still impressionable. This generally takes from 12 to 24 hours. Coat the palm of your hand lightly with oil soap or vegetable oil.
What is the difference between cement and concrete? Although the terms cement and concrete often are used interchangeably, cement is actually an ingredient of concrete. Concrete is a mixture of aggregates and paste. Cement comprises from 10 to 15 percent of the concrete mix, by volume.
You can write with almost any stick you can find on the ground, but you'll get the best results with a plastic ball point pen. Retract the tip or leave the plastic cover on if it's pointed, and write just as you would write on any other hard surface.
Concrete etching is the process of applying an acid and water solution to a concrete floor in order to roughen the surface of the concrete. The acid wash opens pores in the concrete, which ensures strong adhesion of the new coating to its surface.
Dremel 545 and EZ545 are both diamond wheels great for cutting, sawing and carving hard materials; such as, marble, concrete, brick, porcelain, ceramics, hard epoxy and soft and hard wood. Do not use them on metals.
Carefully fill the engraving error with wood putty or filler. Use putty in a matching wood tone for tiny mistakes if you do not plan on staining after. Use wood filler for larger mistakes or if you plan on staining the finished project. Allow the product to dry fully, then sand smooth with a fine-grit sandpaper.

Laser engraving bricks is a much simpler process than sandblasting or photographing. Just create your design in the design software of your choice, send it to the laser, and push start. You can even engrave multiple bricks at once!
Stamping. The most unforgiving part is the actual stamping itself. A good stamped concrete job looks good, while a fair-to-poor stamp job looks horrible. Dealing with poor placement or poor finishing is one thing, but if the imprinting process isn't done properly, it's extremely difficult and expensive to repair.
However, there is one major difference between the two: etching is a chemical process while engraving is a physical process. The former uses an acid solution (etching agent) to etch lines into a surface, often leaving behind intricate and detailed designs.
In the laser engraving process, the mark depth is typically up to 0.005 inches. A subset of this process, known as deep laser engraving, is characterized by a mark that is greater than 0.005 inches deep.

In severe cases of cement burn of the skin, the burn can extend deeper into tissues beneath the skin to damage muscle and even bone. Other skin problems can also occur from cement. It's gritty and contains chemicals that can cause dermatitis characterized by redness, swelling, and itching.
It's best to use a sand/Portland cement mixture that doesn't contain pebbles, such as a concrete patch mix which can be purchased in any hardware store. Or make your own, mixing one part Portland cement to two parts sand.
A typical 24x24 garage slab costs between $3,057 and $5,944 with prices ranging from $5.31 to $8.31 per square foot for a 4” reinforced slab of concrete, and $6.83 to $10.32 per square foot for a 6” slab of reinforced concrete.
As far as installation costs and concrete costs go, poured concrete is technically the most affordable per square foot. However, even though the upfront cost of pavers is higher, concrete pavers offer greater value and durability than poured concrete and stamped concrete.
Remember, Quikrete and regular concrete are basically the same. They're just sand, cement and aggregate mixed with water. Varying these ratios as well as adding in additional ingredients are what makes Quikrete set so fast, but it's still concrete.
Sharpie markers are easy to use, but they mark up your concrete sidewalk or driveway. The concrete has a porous surface, allowing the ink to seep into the tiny crevices. A product such as turpentine lifts the ink, allowing it to be scrubbed away from the concrete.
The permanent marker will work on almost all concrete surfaces under any conditions. It is not required to clean the concrete surface before using the marker. The permanent paint marker works effectively and is extremely difficult and virtually impossible to remove.
Etching is a crucial step in preparing concrete for painting. It gives the surface tooth to adhere to, so your paint is more likely to stick for a long time. Most concrete paints require etching and if they don't, do it anyway. Don't skip this step if you want a long-lasting painted concrete floor.
Etching – Vinegar's ability to dissolve CaCO3 will dull your marble, travertine, concrete and terrazzo surfaces. It may “clean” the surface but it is also dissolving pits into the finish and effectively dulling it. This will affect marble, travertine, concrete and concrete terrazzo surfaces.
Before acid etching, make sure the concrete is free of all oil, contaminants, grease, and dirt. Do not let the concrete dry out before or during application of the acid solution. Apply the acid solution: Use the 2 gallon plastic watering container to sprinkle the acid solution on the concrete.
