Do fluorescent lights cost a lot to run?
Fluorescent tubes last several years. An urban myth has continued to circulate about the amount of electricity used by fluorescent tubes when they are first turned on. The extra electricity used is negligible.
Is it cheaper to leave fluorescent lights on all the time?
It takes more energy to start a fluorescent that it does to run it, so leave the lights on all the time to save money on your electric bill. When you turn on a fluorescent light bulb (correctly called a "lamp"), there is a very brief jump in current when the ballast charges the cathodes and causes the lamp to start.
Does turning fluorescent lights on and off save energy?
The amount of electricity consumed to supply the inrush current is equal to a few seconds or less of normal light operation. Turning off fluorescent lights for more than 5 seconds will save more energy than will be consumed in turning them back on again.
A common myth about lighting system is that it is more expensive to turn lights on and off, so it's better to just leave lights all the time. Not true! In other words, if fluorescent lights will be off for five mintues or longer, it's more cost effective to turn them off than to leave them on.
Despite myths you may have heard, turning your lights on and off doesn't use more electricity than leaving your lights on. Turning off the lights when you aren't in a room is one of the easiest ways to save energy.
Let's say you have a 60-watt incandescent lightbulb and you are paying 12 cents per kWh of energy. Leaving the bulb on the whole day will therefore cost you: 0.06 (60 watts / 1000) kilowatts x 24 hours x 12 cents = approximately 20 cents in one day.
The answer is surprising. A typical 32 watt, four foot fluorescent lamp is rated to burn for about 20,000 hours. Fewer starts mean longer lamp life, so if you burn it longer each time it is switched on, you extend its expected burning life. Leaving it on 24 hours a day should yield about 34,000 hours.
Turning your lights off can help save energy and money. You can calculate how much power you can save for each light bulb you switched off per hour. If you have an electric rate of 20 cents per kilowatt-hour, then you can save about 1.2 cents when you turned off a light bulb per hour.
Fluorescent to LED Conversion Kits
On average, an electrician charges $50-$100 an hour. Once the value of the electrician is added to the value of the LED conversion kit and LED bulb, the cost can be a bit high with an all-around amount of about $160-$506.
Upgrading Incandescent/CFL Replacements to LED Costs. Replacing incandescent and compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs with LED bulbs will cost about $6 – $9 for a 10-Watt LED. Therefore, if you change 24 bulbs, it will cost $144 – $216 to replace those all at once.
The Bad: Fluorescent tubes & CFL bulbs contain a small amount of mercury gas (about 4 mg) – which is toxic to our nervous system, lungs and kidneys. So long as bulbs stay intact, the mercury gas is no threat.
LED strip lights do not cost a lot of electricity compared to traditional incandescent lights. Consumption is directly determined by the length of the strip light and its light density. A standard 5-meter strip will cost less than $3 a year to run, on average.
A light-emitting diode, or LED for short, is a lamp that emits light in a very narrow band of wavelengths. Because of this, LED's are far more energy efficient than incandescent or fluorescent lights, which emit light in a much wider band of wavelengths.
CFLs are admittedly more finicky than incandescent bulbs. Some of the factors that can cause them to burn out early include vibrations, temperature, enclosures, use with incompatible dimmers, poor base contact with the fixture, and fluctuations in power.
Higher Initial Cost.
The initial cost of an LED lightbulb is significantly more than a fluorescent light, but due to the long life of a bulb, you do end up saving over time.
Turning lights on and off weakens all light bulbs. LEDs are affected due to the capacitors facing electrical stress, incandescents weaken due to their delicate filament, and CFLs weaken due to the high start up voltage going through the electrodes.

A typical neon or incandescent night light uses about 1.5 to 7.5 watts, while the LED and electroluminescent night lights consume approximately 0.5 watts per hour.
